Memorial monument to the fallen soldiers of “S’Acqua Durci”

When the war is over, attempts are made to resume normal life even with a beach vacation. Everything needed to be prepared: tables, pots and pans and provisions to assemble “sa barracca.” The journey was first by truck then by oxcart almost to the beach. At “S’Acqua Durci”many families from neighboring towns with lots of children gather.

After a stormy night, on the morning of August 3, 1945, they found a large iron object with an oval shape and sharp protuberances on the seashore. It was a mine brought from the sea. Between those who were intent on defusing it and those who highlighted the danger, the former prevailed. The loud explosion was followed by the roar. It was a massacre. The beach and its surroundings are the scene of the massacre of torn bodies and the wounded brought to the hospital in Ingurtosu. Eleven Gonnese and five Guspinese died.
