The master plan for the airport, located on the shores of the Santa Gilla lagoon, is due to Ferrara engineer Giorgio Gandini, whose work was mainly carried out around 1930. It is accessed through an airplane wing canopy, an element of clear futurist inspiration. Inside there are interesting buildings of modern architecture that include all the functions necessary for daily life: the Command building, the airmen’s barracks, the officers’ club, the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto, the cinema, living quarters, the canteen, and the commissary. The architectural quality is very high, and even today the various pavilions, preserved almost in their entirety, retain all the typical elements of Italian rationalism. The larger of the two aviorimesse, more than 100 m long, is called “Savigliano,” as it was built by the Società Nazionale delle Officine di Savigliano (Cuneo) on a prototype designed in 1933.
