Located on the immediate outskirts of the city, Monserrato Park has great symbolic and historical value for Sassari, as the entire property was undoubtedly the most important of the city’s noble estates. In the second half of the 19th century the green area took on its present neoclassical layout, architecturally valuable artifacts such as the Water Temple, the Nymphaeum, the Tower and the Belvedere Pool were prepared in the neo-Gothic style: a true work of art, designed by taking advantage of the natural slopes of the land and conceived as an integrated system of architecture and nature. Embellishing this evocative and charming picture are the old farmhouse and adjoining church. The pedestrian access is located near the central axis, behind the Frog Tank, which is the iconic point of the whole garden. The park has a total area of about six hectares, an irregular shape, and within it a variety of plants that create sudden closures and glimpses of the city’s most beautiful perspective views. Fine specimens of palms, citrus, carob and olive trees, pomegranates, magnolias, cypresses, willows, holm oaks, limes, pines, horse chestnuts and lentisk hedges can be seen.
