Among the many military batteries dating back to World War II in the territory of Alghero, one in particular stands out for its size and state of preservation. It consists of a large barracks, four 149/12 howitzer emplacements, underground shelters for soldiers, ammunition reserves and an underground walkway.
These structures were built during the massive fortification of the Sardinian coast and hinterland, when Sardinia was prepared to repel a possible enemy landing.
In the heart of the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park are more than 200 military installations, including batteries, strongholds and isolated coastal posts.
Immersed in the Mediterranean maquis, among junipers and mastic trees, one can still observe casemates, artillery positions, ammunition depots and numerous barracks. An impressive defensive system, extraordinarily intact, which counts about 667 structures scattered throughout the territory of Alghero: a true open-air museum, where nature and historical memory coexist.
