Mount Ortobene

Mount Ortobene, familiarly called Su Monte, is a multifaceted granite elevation overlooking the city of Nuoro. It reaches 955 meters at the summit of Cuccuru Nigheddu. On the summit stands the symbol of the city of Nuoro: the great Statue of the Redeemer, a bronze work by sculptor Vincenzo Jerace, erected on the summit in 1901. The mountain was inhabited by peoples of the Recent Neolithic and Early Metal Age (Eneolithic and Early Bronze) since the second half of the fourth millennium and throughout the third millennium BC. This is attested by the various testimonies in the area: hypogeic tombs (Domus de Janas), locally called “Sas Bìrghines,” dug in the granite and located mostly on the western slopes.
