The building was constructed after 1848, the year of the enactment of the new municipal law that provided its own headquarters for the institution. The initial building must have been small, as around 1864 the question of an extension arose.
Since 1928 it was the headquarters of the Cagliari-Monserrato District. The structure housed elementary and middle schools until the 1960s: the gable still bears the inscription “SCVOLA.” On November 18, 1991, Monserrato was granted autonomy from Cagliari, and around the year 2000 the building was renovated and now houses the offices of the municipality. On the right side is arranged the gonfalon bearing the coat of arms of Monserrato, which also appears in the pavement of the Piazza Maria Vergine, the symbol of the town.
