Municipal park and mine of “Perd’e Pibera”

Perd’e Pibera Park, located about 6 km from the town, is a Cultural Good “Environment” of considerable interest, among the largest on the Island. From the park it is possible to reach the Linas massif and the Murru Mannu waterfall, the highest in Sardinia. Since the late 1950s there has been a reforestation site of the Forestry Authority/Forestas, with an initial start of 100 hectares and later with extensions up to Punta Cammedda and Monte Omu . Today it is a complex of about 400 hectares. In the most degraded areas, mixed reforestation of conifers and broadleaf trees has been carried out in order to promote the development of tree cover and encourage the development of native vegetation. The park is characterized by a dense, centuries-old forest of holm oaks, including taxus bacata, Mediterranean undergrowth with phillyrea, strawberry tree, heather, and cistus, while in the southern part, due to morphology, it is dominated by scrub, as well as a large area of mixed reforestation. A diverse and numerous fauna is present with wild boars, foxes, hares and a large number of birds. The park is equipped with several rest stops with tables and benches. It is included in the “Santa Barbara Path” of the “Cultural and Religious Paths.”

Of the mining activities of the late 1800s and mid 1900s, one of the main profitability of the country, ruined architectural structures, examples of industrial archaeology, remain. The Gonnese territory includes the disused mines of Perd’e Pibera, Fenugu Sibiri, S’Acqua Is Prunas-Genna S’Olioni, and Salaponi. Within the park is the disused molybdenite mine, the largest Sardinian deposit, a sulfide that is also rare in the rest of Italy. Today, traces remain of the tunnels and the mine buildings renovated and converted by the municipality, both as the headquarters of the forestry site and as accommodation facilities for tourism, reception, conferences, and exhibitions. Nature, hiking and sports events are held. Some of the mining sites are in the “Mining Network” nomination project for UNESCO.
