Museum of Sacred Art

The museum, opened in 2009, is located in the premises of the former Tridentine Seminary (17th cent.). The rich collection of silverware belonging to bishops and the cathedral from the period between the 16th and 20th centuries testifies to the taste, influences, and techniques used by master silversmiths in the workmanship of monstrances, crosses, chalices, and patens. Prominent among the exhibits is the early 16th-century Gothic-style chalice with paten in embossed and chiseled silver that belonged to Monsignor Giovanni Sanna. There is also a vast collection of vestments such as chasubles, copes, surplices, maniples, and chiroteche, made of a variety of finely crafted fine fabrics such as damasks, silks, and brocades. The wooden sculptures and paintings from the 17th-20th centuries are expressions of faith as well as the artistry of local and non-local craftsmen. The exhibits are accompanied by a substantial documentary repertoire belonging to the diocesan historical archives on the second floor of the same building.
