The Municipal Museum of the Towers and Castles of Sardinia, consisting of the Monagheddu-Cannas collection, was inaugurated on April 12, 2002. The Monagheddu-Cannas collection, consisting of philological reconstructions to scale, reproduces military artifacts, belonging to various eras, built for the defense of Sardinia, and buildings, figurines and dioramas intimately related to them. Each artifact has been reconstructed not as ruins, but in the state it was in when it was in operation.
The reconstruction was done using the same materials with which the original was made. The interiors of the models, meticulously furnished according to historical records, can be inspected after removal of the pavements, roofs, balconies, attics, partitions, arches and vaults. Each philological reconstruction is the result of a thorough and rigorous research investigation: in Municipal, Provincial, Regional, National and Foreign Archives; in Private, Military and Ecclesiastical Libraries and Archives; inspection and survey of the individual artifact and the surrounding area; reasonable reconstruction of missing parts eroded by time or tampered with by man through architectural reading of the artifact and comparison with other similar buildings that have been preserved intact.
The Sicuterat Cultural Association, which holds the curatorship of the Museum, aims to safeguard the environment, enhance, recover and popularize Sardinia’s historical artistic cultural and architectural heritage. The association collaborates with public bodies, schools and other cultural associations to carry out projects, exhibitions, publications and to organize conferences, lectures and guided tours.
