Neapolis Archaeological Area

The city of Neapolis stands on a complex of bumps near the lagoon complex formed by the ponds of Marceddì, San Giovanni and Santa Maria, in the southern part of the Gulf of Oristano.
The area was occupied _ n the Recent Neolithic but important evidence is also present from the Late Bronze Age and the Roman Republican Age.
Research carried out _ no to date testifies to the establishment of a Phoenician colonial settlement at Santa Maria di Nabui as early as the eighth century BC. In Roman times the town continued its expansion reaching an extension of about 34 hectares.
At the current state of research it is possible to identify some speci_ c areas of the Roman city: Small Baths and Castrum, Monumental Area, Large Baths, Road and Cisterns.
