The neighborhood took its name from the sandstone quarries from which the material was traditionally used in historic construction. It sprang up around the 1959/60s with the construction of as many as eight public housing developments; today it includes about 7,000 inhabitants with more than 2,000 households.
Domus de Janas of Cuguttu
Near the civil hospital and behind the council houses are some domus de janas, much ruined and partially destroyed by stone quarrying. Unfortunately, the site is abandoned and reduced to an illegal dump, covered with weeds and bulky waste.
Gothic-Aragonese Crypt
Called “Knight’s Tomb,” it is probably what remains of the old St. James Church, attributable to the 15th century. Long abandoned, it has suffered considerable deterioration.
Maria Pia’s Agricultural Colony
An agricultural penal colony, it has housed hundreds of convicts who have transformed an uncultivated, swampy area into fertile cultivated fields and tidied up the dunes and pine forest that protect the area from the salty winds.
