Oberdan Square

The square holds one of the most valuable war memorials in Sardinia, the work of the most distinguished Sardinian sculptor of the time, Francesco Ciusa. The monument was commissioned to the artist by a local committee in 1921. The monument’s pivotal theme is war, but not understood as a glorious feat, but rather as sacrifice. The anti-heroic interpretation of the monument was not liked by the committee, which imposed on Ciusa the addition of a “Winged Victory,” which he begrudgingly did not realize until 1927, and then refused authorship of the work.
