Old Slaughterhouse – Library and Historical Archives

The Old Slaughterhouse of Quartu, located on the outskirts along the municipal road to Quartucciu, was built as a slaughterhouse in 1901 and remained in operation until 1968. Designed by engineer A.F. Loi, the building underwent some modifications due to a cloudburst in 1889, but maintained a simple elegance and functionality meeting the hygienic standards of the time. The structure is symmetrical to a central axis and features a facade with a wrought-iron entrance gate, office windows, and a slaughter room with closed doors to keep the meat fresh. Surrounding the building were courtyards and sheds for livestock and a pelandra for tanning hides. Today, the Old Slaughterhouse houses not only the Central Library but also the Historical Archives and the Children’s Library, and is an artistically and functionally significant venue.
