Palace of the Province

Queen’s Room and Sciuti Hall

The Palace of the Province of Sassari is one of the most significant monuments of post-unification Sardinia. The imposing building forms the architectural backdrop to the city’s main square, Italy Square. With its composed Classical facade, continuous clear profile, and crowning clock in the central body, it contributes greatly to the nineteenth-century sense of characterization of the township.

Inside, the building has preserved its construction and administrative functionality intact for more than a century. In addition to the sumptuous Sciuti Hall, richly decorated with civic themes that refer to city, regional and national history, the Palace of the Province houses a rich collection of artworks through which we can reconstruct the entire artistic history of the Sardinian twentieth century, starting with the pioneers Francesco Ciusa, Giuseppe Biasi, Filippo Figari and ending with Aligi Sassu, whose large fresco of “Prometheus Giving Fire to Men” placed to adorn the grand staircase of honor, can be admired.

To accommodate the Royals on official visits to Sassari, two bedrooms and a reception hall were specially arranged, based on the instructions of an official of the Royal Household. Prominent among them is the Queen’s Room with its artistic Renaissance-style double bed made of solid wood by the prestigious Clemente furniture maker.
