One of the most panoramic points of the territory of San Giovanni Suergiu is where the lookout of the Ente Foreste is located, near the hamlet of Matzaccara.
Confirming the strategic position of this locality is the World War II blockhouse that still guards it, a structure from which the entire gulf of Palmas and the lagoon of Sant’Antioco up to the island of San Pietro could be controlled.
From the summit it is also possible to observe the area of the hamlet of Matzaccara, rich in archaeological evidence that is still little known: although it has not been possible to identify precisely the site of ancient Populum, scholars agree in identifying in this area the site of the center mentioned by the geographer Ptolemy in the second century AD. Supporting this hypothesis are conspicuous remains of necropolis and thermal structures.
In addition to these, a number of Domus de janas and nuragic structures are reported.
