Parish Church “N. S. Delle Grazie”

The first record of the parish, lacking the title, dates back to 1341 (Rationes Decimarum Sardinia). Further information on parish activity results in papers from the second half of the 15th century, but we have documentary certainty of the present building with the title of St. Mary’s from 1560. The start of the factory is to be placed between the second half of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, the layout of which initially included a single rectangular nave with two bays, presbytery chapel lower and narrower than the hall, and two chapels, one on each side. In fact, this is how it appears in 1577, in the report drawn up following the pastoral visit of the Archbishop of Cagliari Francesco Perez, in which the “capilla mayor” (main chapel), equipped with the high altar with the retable, the statue of the Virgin and the chapels of St. Basil and St. Sebastian are mentioned. In 1629 the construction of the chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary (first chapel on the left starting from the entrance) was commissioned, which was to be the same as the chapel of St. Basil, which already existed in the parish. The construction of a chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, also mentioned as a church, is documented in the years 1668-1672. In the 1681 restoration work, the chapel of the Virgin of Mount Carmel is mentioned, among other chapels. Master Vicente Mulas in 1738 made the new sacristy (identifiable today in the fourth chapel on the left starting from the entrance). Other works were carried out during the eighteenth century, the most important of which were those performed by master Antonio Denegri (1780-83) with the opening of two arches on either side of the main chapel. This work was followed in 1789 by the construction by master Luigi Isola of Quartu of a stone enclosure wall for the entire circuit of the church square (demolished in the 1960s). In 1814, with funding from Canon Prebendatus Ignazio Deplano, the bell tower was rebuilt by Maestro Antonio Camba. The other building interventions of the 19th century returned the building substantially as we see it today, with the exception of the variant made in 1967, which involved the demolition of the back wall of the main chapel, the consequent extension of the hall and the construction of a new presbytery.
