On July 6, 1924, Cantina di Monserrato, the oldest social winery in Sardinia, was born. It was born from the will of 79 winemakers from the area who decided to pool their experience, their work and their products in order to make their activity significantly present within the agricultural and productive economy of the entire region.
The Monserrato Winery was one of the few Cooperatives that survived the wartime crisis and having good equipment and valuable technicians, it continued with all the activities of conferring grapes and processing large quantities of wine. The growing expansion of the wine market brought a huge growth in conferments by the Cooperative’s members in the years 1959 with 116,692.00 quintals and in 1962 with 139,791.00 quintals at the plants located in Monserrato, Ussana, Sestu and Capoterra. The winery’s headquarters in Viale La Playa was established in the first half of the 1900s, corresponding to the redevelopment of the port of Cagliari, with the aim of improving the management of its import-export trade.
The Cooperative’s focus remained the sale of bulk wine in tanks until 2009, destined for European countries, particularly Germany, which have since become producers themselves. Today the winery is organized throughout the region and nationally, as well as having importers and distributors in several states in the rest of the world.
