On the Stintino waterfront there is a sculpture depicting a girl with oriental features sitting next to an empty chair: it is the Statue of Peace, an opportunity to reflect on history and better understand the suffering of women victims of wars. The monument commemorates young women who were abducted and forced into prostitution for the Japanese military in the Indo-Pacific during World War II. The monument was donated to the Municipality of Stintino by the South Korean foundation Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance for the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery by Japan, which has been working since the 1990s to keep alive the memory of Korean women called comfort women. The Municipality of Stintino accepted the statue as a universal symbol against violence against women.
