Roman Farm S’imbalconadu

The villa of S’Imbalconadu, easily reached by driving a few kilometers from Olbia along S.P. 24 in the direction of Loiri, is a complex from the Republican Roman period (2nd-1st century B.C.) useful for the agrarian exploitation of the Padrongianus plain . The site occupies a small relief close to the river, and consists of a residential building placed at the center of a large courtyard, on which rooms for production activities or for the storage of products opened.

The parts preserved today pertain to the central body, the southern wing and partly to the western wing. The building technique of the whole complex consists of local granite boulders, bound with mud mortar, on which the mud-brick elevations must have rested. Two rooms in the southern area are connected to cisterns: these were probably structures for crushing and storing products such as oil or wine. The other rooms facing the courtyard show traces of planning and product storage activities. The central body, on the other hand, constituted the dwelling of the tenant and his family, and must have been on two floors, so that the farm and surrounding land could be controlled from above.

From the area comes a stele with the Punic deity Tanit, now in the Sassari museum, which shows the persistence of Punic cults in the height of the Roman era.
