Romanesque Basilica of San Simplicio

The area on which the Romanesque church of San Simplicio stands conceals earlier phases of extra-urban worship, first perhaps Phoenician then Greek, Punic, Roman, and early Christian, as is well demonstrated by the archaeological site that can be visited underground in the square in front of it. The former cathedral of the Giudicato of Gallura is dedicated to the cult of Simplicio, patron saint of the city of Olbia and Gallura, whom Christian tradition establishes as a martyr under the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. The church, built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, features the use of a mixed construction technique: brick and granite. The style is Romanesque with Pisan and Lombard influences.
