Romanesque Church of St. John

Walking down the Via de “s’arruga de sa cresia beccia” we come to what until 1935 was the parish church of the municipality located in what must have formerly been the center of the town. Named after St. John the Baptist (according to some elders after St. John the Evangelist), “sa cresia beccia” is reported in historical sources as early as 1341, and its construction dates back a few decades earlier. It was a parish church until 1935, but in the early 1930s it was abandoned due to precarious structural conditions and was replaced by the present Church of St. John the Baptist located in Piazza IV Novembre, which was inaugurated in 1959 (the mosaic by Filippo Figari is valuable on the façade) and recently restored. Today only a few ruins remain. It is located on the outskirts of the town, in what was called precisely “s’arruga de Cresia beccia” until a few decades ago, where the road widens into a vast square that used to be the church square. In the absence of more precise information about the date of construction, experts–on examination of certain architectural features–date the building to a period between the late 13th century and early 14th century.
