The granite plateau that stretches about 13 km from Bitti, guards, immersed in a fascinating forest of cork oaks and picturesque rocky outcrops, one of the most striking monumental stratifications produced by the Nuragic civilization during its millennial history: the Romanzesu settlement-cultural complex. Beginning in the late 1980s, a series of regular excavation campaigns, supervised by D.ssa M.A. Fadda, has made it possible to explore about one-twentieth of the settlement area (about 6 ha), bringing to light a dozen huts and 5 buildings of cultural and/or ceremonial use. The settlement rises during the 15th century B.C., starting from the end of the 13th century B.C. numerous cult buildings, megaron temples, well temple and “community” structures with clear ritual/ceremonial use unique as typology, the monumental staircase arrangement attached to the well temple, the large sub-elliptical enclosure and the heroon temple, testifying to the functional transformation of “Romanzesu” from a simple village into a “community ceremonial center”/village-sanctuary.
