An object of great curiosity for some years now is the anthropomorphic cliff located near the settlement of Is Urigus, on the hillside of Crabonaxia behind the necropolis of Is Loccis Santus. It is a huge human face (eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin) and for that reason it has been interpreted by many as a trace of prehistoric cults, even traceable to the Egyptian civilization. In reference to such theories, the name “sphinx” by which it is popularly known has probably become invalid.
At present it is not actually possible to determine whether this rock was so shaped by human or atmospheric agents, that is, whether it is the outcome of the deliberate intervention of an ancient civilization or the simple result of the action of sun, rain and wind over the centuries. The most likely hypothesis is that it is a rock shaped by time, since there is nothing remotely comparable in Sardinia that would allow us to place it within a well-defined cultural facies, but this does not prevent one from feeling a strong sense of fascination at being in front of a natural monument with such singular features.
