The salt marshes are part of a SCI (Site of Community Interest) area because of the presence of various animal and plant species, some of them endangered: there are numerous bird species that have elected these ponds as their realm, such as the pink flamingo, marsh harrier, great egret, avocet and stilt-bird, which forage for food along the silt banks and sand of the ponds, or rest under cover among the reeds or typhoons. The most distinctive plants that inhabit these brackish environments are the various species of salicornia, low, crassulent plants that can withstand both the high salinity of the ponds’ water and the strong winds. Thanks to the sun and the landscape reflected on the ponds, the salt marshes are able to provide visitors with wonderful scenery, depending on the time of day.
