Saline Theater

The most interesting community building in the State Salt Pans is probably the headquarters of the Dopolavoro, inaugurated on October 20, 1932 and subsequently abandoned until its recovery by the Akròama – Teatro Stabile d’Arte Contemporanea cooperative, dating back to the 1990s. The theater, located across the Molentargius salt pans canal, stands near housing built after World War II and has an extremely compact form, concluded by a pavilion roof.

It consists of a low body surrounding the inner hall, opening on the side toward the ponds into an airy portico supported by slender, stylized pillars. The inner hall consists of a stalls and a small balcony encircled by a beautiful cast-iron railing and is decorated with frescoes with classical subjects, which are repeated on the walls and in the coffered ceiling framing a large oval. Modern performance needs required the construction of the stage tower, which partially altered the original building.

This also houses the theater’s offices and management and a performing arts library. The OND (Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro) inscription is still visible on the side entrance, recalling a typical institution of Fascism.
