San Simplicio Church

The Romanesque church of San Simplicio, former cathedral of the giudicato of Gallura, appeared to be located clearly outside the urban perimeter of the medieval city, whose nine was Civita. In 304 AD. Simplicio, bishop of Fausania at the time of Diocletian’s persecutions, was supposedly martyred, according to tradition, on the site where the first early Christian church, dedicated to his name, would later rise between 594 and 611. Its construction began towards the end of the year 1000 and was completed in stages in the first half of the 12th century.
