Fonte de lo Cànter is located on a rocky ridge near the Calabona bridge. The spring, which gushes from limestone walls, is topped by a large barrel-vaulted portico, paved with pebbles and enhanced by two long granite benches.
Outside, along the terraces sloping toward the cliff, the drainage channel leads to the old wash house.
The earliest historical records date from 1784, and the most important restoration of the complex was in 1842.
Until the early decades of the 1900s it was a valuable drinking water resource for Alghero citizens lacking wells or cisterns, and until the 1970s a popular destination for pleasant out-of-town excursions.
For years abandoned and hopelessly destined for oblivion, it has recently been brought back to light thanks to the intervention of the Gruppo Speleologico Algherese, the Cultural Association l’Alba and other volunteers.
