Monument to the Immaculate Conception

The marble monument to the Immaculate Conception was created by luigi Guglielmi in 1882 on a high plinth designed by engineer Giovanni Onnis. Built on the strength of an idea launched by Carlo Boyl in 1856 in the peculiar religious climate that followed the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, the simulacrum of the Virgin was made in purist forms. It originally looked in the direction of the “Satta” elementary school, but due to a violent air displacement caused by the bombs that fell in 1943, it rotated on its axis in the direction of today’s Sassari Street. The monument’s placement in Carmine Square accompanies the transformation of that part of the city that, even in the 1880s, was considered “outside the walls.”

Monument to Charles Felix

The bronze monument to Charles Felix was made by sculptor Andrea Galassi. The monument was made in plaster in Rome and cast in bronze in Cagliari in 1829 by artillerymen Marcia and Castiglia, under the direction of Carlo Boyl. However, the work was not fully completed until 1833 because of lengthy cleaning operations. A. Galassi, inspired by Canova models, proposed an idealized representation of the sovereign. The monument, placed on a double pedestal designed by Gaetano Cima, has stood in the place where we see it today since 1860 and marks the urban transformation at the meeting point between the historic districts of Marina and Stampace.

Monument to Giuseppe Verdi

The bronze monument to Giuseppe Verdi was made by Giuseppe Boero in 1901 and was commissioned by the committee promoting the Maestro’s honors, which was formed after his death on January 27, 1901. G. Boero depicts the musician in half-length, in old age, dressed in the fashion of the time, on a pedestal that was redone after World War II and where, erroneously, the date 1911 was placed instead of 1901. The bust is part of the decoration of G. Matteotti Square, whose history is linked to the construction of the Royal Railways in 1879.
