SS Annunziata Church

Originally it was a small country church or at any rate a place dedicated to prayer. In the early 17th century it was occupied by the Friars Minor of St. Francis of Paola.

In 1643 the chronicles speak of a terrible storm that almost completely destroyed the church. Rebuilt by the Scolopian Fathers, on March 25, 1645 it was dedicated to the Virgin Annunciate. In 1700 the need arose to build the site for the novitiate: on that occasion the King of Spain, Charles II, also offered his own pecuniary contribution.

In 1855 the Scolopians left L’Annunziata and the novitiate was used as a Carabinieri barracks, and the church closed until 1871, when it became a branch of St. Anne’s parish. The Minor Conventuals did not settle in until 1911, and the church became autonomous in 1916. The Scolopians left numerous sacred furnishings and among them the altarpiece by Giovanni Marghinotti painted in 1833 on commission from Marquis Manca of Villahermosa. The right side altar, dedicated to St. Joseph Calasanz, was erected in 1849 by Scolopian Brother Giuseppe Manca. A beautiful pyx bears the punch with the Scolopian coat of arms with the date 1674. Inside the church is an interesting oil painting depicting The Annunciation. This work was found in 1654 by Fra Pietro della Croce, a Scolopian, in the cellar of the Institute of St. Joseph in the castle. It is a work of Spanishate taste and still under study. A brief mention is due to the high altar for which the placement of marble blocks began in 1933. The design was by the artist Gina Baldacchini of Perugia, the same artist who painted in tempera and decorated the vault of the church with gilded stucco; this work was completely removed due to water infiltration when the masonry was restored in 1984. During the same period, a Roman cistern was found inside the cloister.
