St. Andrew’s Parish Church and Bell Tower

The parish church of St. Andrew stands in the southern part of the village, not far from the left bank of the Foddeddu stream. Its slender bell tower and dome characterize its shape and soften the panorama. It has a glorious history, culminating in the period when it was the cathedral of the Diocese of Ogliastra, from 1824 to 1927, when Tortolì was an episcopal see. The earliest evidence of a church of Sant’Andrea in Tortolì is related to a small village that stood on the slopes of Monte Attu, northwest of the town, whose inhabitants around the year 1000, moved to the plains and built a new church dedicated to the saint. In the last decades of the 1700s, work was put into the construction of the new church. It had to be large and spacious, worthy of the small town that was growing rapidly.
