St. Antiochus of Bisarcio

The Church of Sant’Antioco di Bisarcio is one of the best examples of Pisan Romanesque in Sardinia.
The fascinating old cathedral stands out to visitors for the uniqueness of its architecture and rich relief decoration from the 12th century.
A cathedral of the eponymous diocese from the 11th to the 16th century, built entirely of local stone, the church had three different construction phases.
The first cathedral was built in the second half of the 11th century and was later damaged by fire.
In the 12th century rebuilding work began with the construction of the hall with three naves marked by arcades on columns, the apse, oriented eastward, and the square bell tower leaning against the southern flank.
The construction of the two-story portico leaning against the facade dates to the early 13th century.
A staircase inside the portico provides access to the upper rooms, which conceal the first facade.
Substantial ruins of the rectory, episcope and medieval village of Guisarchum are preserved in the cathedral area.
