St. Catherine’s Church

The church was erected from 1580 to 1607 by the Jesuits. The work was directed by the architect Bernardoni, who, during the construction of the work in 1583, was called to design the cathedral in Krakow, so the church was completed by workers from Sassari.
When observing the layout internally, one notices that the work is characterized in the lower part by the presence of round arches and architectural elements of the classicist type.
The dome placed at the intersection of the hall with the transept is set on an octagonal drum connected inferiorly to the quadrangular space by spandrels carved with geometric and floral decorative motifs.
The interior houses an iconographic and decorative apparatus largely contemporary with the construction of the church; it is consistent with the Classicist and Counter-Reformation dictates of the Jesuit Order.
Among the works on display is certainly worth mentioning the pictorial cycle by the Flemish Johan Bilevelt, active in the city between 1622 and 1652, the year of his death from the plague, who painted canvases depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, in which the Valverde with the 17th-century Rosello Fountain can be glimpsed in the lower part, the Flagellation of Christ, Saints Peter and Paul and the Vision of Saint Ignatius alla Storta.
In the presbytery, near the high altar, one can admire the remarkable 17th-century wooden crucifix.
Exiting the church, one can finally notice the seventeenth-century stoup that appears to be supported by a capital with an early medieval column, of oriental ancestry.
