St. George: the Simulacrum, Sa Cadira de Su Santu and the Votive Mantle

Dating back to the late 1600s, the simulacrum of St. George is kept in the shrine above the tabernacle in which it remains until Angel Monday, when it is accompanied by the faithful to the parish church, until April 22, the day when in solemn procession it returns to its church, kicking off three days of festivities.

The simulacrum parades in procession inside “Sa Cadira de su Santu,” a light blue-colored wooden processional canopy probably dating from the mid-1800s. This as a tradition is decorated by the women of the village, who pass it on to the younger ones, with flowers, votive rosettes and Ex-Votos donated by the faithful.

On April 22, members of the charitable organization dress the simulacrum in a red velvet cloak, in which are sewn the jewels donated by the faithful asking for its grace. It is the duty of the St. George Standing Committee (a well-known Moral Body) to guard the cloak in the evening and to clothe the Saint in the morning. The canopy was carried on the shoulders of the men of the village until 2015, when the faithful donated a wooden wagon, pulled by a yoke of oxen, in the solemn procession.

Another feast related to the saint is July 18, the date on which in about 1730 the simulacrum was found sprinkled with copious amounts of sweat, and this twice, as recorded in minutes made by a Delegate with an appropriate Notary.
