St. James Church

The church stands in the heart of the Villanova neighborhood, flanked by the two late 17th-century oratories. The original appearance of the building has changed considerably over the centuries. The earliest records date from 1346, most likely referring to a church having a layout typical of Catalan religious architecture with a single nave, narrow, raised capilla mayor and side chapels. In the mid-eighteenth century the Catalan Gothic structures were concealed and, starting in 1838, a new neoclassical-style elevation was begun based on a design by Gaetano Cima. Following damage sustained under bombing in 1943, the interior of the church was restored between 1948 and 1953. In the early 1960s the pre-existing Gothic structures of some chapels and 18th-century additions were restored.

The interior has a nave with a barrel vault reinforced by transverse arches. Lateral to the nave are chapels having both pointed and round arches, vaulted with cross or barrel vaults.

The presbyterial area is covered with four-pointed star vaulting. The facade has overtly neoclassical stylistic features: the projecting gable resting on two pairs of Corinthian columns, the simple portal surmounted by the light point, and the elegant decorations. The bell tower, built in two stages, is square-bore with single-light ogival openings.

The first part was already completed in 1438; the second, begun in 1442, saw its final arrangement in 1990. Signs of bombardment from the French siege of 1793 are still visible on the bell tower.
