St. John’s Tower

The Tower of St. John, made of sandstone in the 16th century, in its time as majestic as the nearby tower of Sulis, was downsized for military reasons during the Savoy period, during the first half of the 1700s, while retaining the original features of the Catalan-Aragonese style. Despite the downsizing, the ensemble still looks impressive today and the Tower retains all the charm of yesteryear with about 10 meters in diameter, nearly 60 in circumference and walls with as much as 4.30 m. thickness.

The structure is covered by a vault supported by mighty ribs arranged in a radial pattern and sunk directly into the perimeter walls, at a height of about half the total floor development.

The current ground floor now houses the “Digital Canvas” gaming experience developed as part of the MED European project GAIMS GAmifIcation for Memorable tourist experienceS.
