St. Mary Magdalene Parish Church

The parish church of St. Mary Magdalene dated back to the 16th century. Unfortunately, it was torn down in 1956, years of iconoclastic fury, and rebuilt from scratch. Only the bell tower with its 1581 bronze bell and, inside, the fine Baroque-style altar by the Ligurian workshop of Pietro Pozzo were saved.

On either side of the apse are four large paintings by contemporary local artist Francesco Argiolu, there depicting the Annunciation, Birth, Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. There are several guarded statues of saints venerated by the religious community, such as Santa Vida (Saint Vitalia), whose cult is particularly heartfelt.

The small country churches are dedicated to Santu Predu, Santa Ruxi and Sant’Arrocu (Rocco). Special mention to Santa Maria Nuraxi, so-called for the Church dedicated to her in the locality of Nuraxi, where the medieval village of the same name once stood and has long since disappeared. Characteristic of the religious festivities is the presence of the Fucilieri, who with blank shots pay homage to S’Incontru and the processions of the Saints.
