At the end of the Straight rises the Steps carried out in the years following World War II. The idea to build the monument came from a Gonnese citizen eager to build a grotto for Our Lady of Lourdes. He succeeded in convincing the villagers and a committee was formed, and after various evaluations they agreed on San Simeon Hill. Following the donation of land, work began in 1947. After earthworks, examination of the granite from the San Cosimo quarry, various activities to recover the funds, work of stonemasons, masons and the entire population, free transportation by ox carts and “acquisition” of the steps, by the early 1950s the Grooted, with its 292 steps, was finished and the simulacrum was purchased. But due to issues between the committee and the Curia, the work came to a halt. Subsequently the Bleachers Was transferred to the municipality. Construction of the final part, forecourt and cave resumed in 2006 and opened in 2014. From the top of the hill it is possible to see much of Campidano. Many Gonnese, in the hard work of construction, offered to the Mother of God their relatives and friends who only a few years earlier died or were injured, in the tragic bombing of 1943. On a stone to the left of the cave is carved a poem by Lino Concas “For a chorus of silences“, where Gonnos “…in remembrance of her dead children, of that mournful February 17, 1943, in your cave sadly prays“.
