Tassoni Estense Palace

The palace was built around 1481 and given to Giulio Tassoni, a nobleman and condottiere in the service of the Estense family, thanks to whom, for military merit, it took the surname Tassoni Estense.
The building remained in the family’s ownership until 1855, when the entire complex was converted into a psychiatric hospital, at that time a place of isolation and detention.
More than a century later, Antonio Slavich, a student of Basaglia, arrived in Ferrara and implemented modern therapeutic paths for psychiatric disorders.
With the hospital decommissioned, a new course began for the building: the wing on Quartieri Street was opened in 1991 as the Faculty of Architecture.
For years, laboratories and studios have been producing graduate and doctoral theses concerning Palazzo Tassoni in its main core. The work of students, guided by that of specialists, enabled the inauguration of the monumental wing in 2008.
In the main floor honor hall, graduates are proclaimed and conferences are held. One of the most fascinating rooms, fully decorated, is the Department Director’s office.
