A Site of Community Interest (SCI), the San Teodoro Lagoon is a very valuable ecosystem rich in bird and fish species. The fishiness of its waters has a very ancient history. A Pisan tax register from the early 14th century indicates a fishpond right in the San Teodoro area. Other records of the desire of some private individuals to open a fishpond in the lagoon date back to the first half of the nineteenth century. In the 1920s, among the most important commercial activities in the area is mentioned the trade of fish caught in the San Teodoro fishpond, then owned by the De’ Filippi family. Still visible today are small buildings from the last century used by fishermen alongside modern facilities for raising and processing lagoon fish species.
