Tola House Oil Mill

The Villa Tola was commissioned in 1848 by Baron Giovanni Tola in the lands he inherited from his wife, Isabella Cadello Asquer, to Gaetano Cima, the celebrated Cagliari architect, at that time at the height of his career.

The house was designed in typical neoclassical style (but with the great peculiarity of using unbaked brick, su ladiri) surrounded by a garden and bordered by a wall with a monumental entrance on the street. The building has in the main elevation a six-pillar loggia on which five round arches are set; a central body with side rooms with a square plan, arranged symmetrically on the two wings and on the octagonal tiburium that also stands out externally from the profile of the house. By virtue of a of some contractual clauses dating back to 1748, the house is inherited only by the female branch of the family, which will always play a prominent role in the management of the house and the attached farm.

Among the rustic outbuildings on the property of particular historical interest is certainly the oil mill, built in the late 17th century on two floors entirely of ladiri. The building underwent restoration in 2000. The ground floor presents, as a connecting room, a traditional Campidanese lolla that leads respectively to the oil mill proper and the warehouse for the storage of the foodstuffs, produced as a result of the milling of the olives. On the ground floor, the oil mill jealously guards the archaic tools of the trade: the ancient millstone, press, and vat; while jars with family crests dating back to 1910 are kept in the food storage room. An internal staircase leads to the second floor, where olives were stored before milling.
