Tortolì Station

Tortolì Station, formerly Arbatax Station in Tortolì, is a railway station serving the municipality of Tortolì, along the Mandas-Arbatax railway line, has been used exclusively as a tourist railway since 1997.

The history of the port of call began in the latter part of the nineteenth century, with the assignment to the Italian Society for Secondary Railroads of Sardinia to build a narrow-gauge railway network on the island, including, among other things, a railway line to connect Ogliastra with Cagliari. Thus it was that between the 1880s and 1890s the railway was built from the vicinity of the Mandas station (along the Cagliari-Isili railway) to the port of Arbatax, passing also through Tortolì, whose station was inaugurated on April 1, 1893, coinciding with the opening to traffic of the railway section between Gairo and Arbatax.

Passed through various managements, the station assumed the name “Arbatax di Tortolì” in the Fascist era and in the years immediately following, then returned to its original name. The facility, over the years, continued to be the main port of call for public transport service in the Ogliastra center’s territory, both for rail transport and for the bus service that the FCS (and later the FdS) began to run in parallel with the trains during the twentieth century. However, on June 16, 1997, the Mandas-Arbatax was closed to ordinary rail traffic and was designated for exclusive tourist use as part of the Trenino Verde service. Since 2010, ARST has taken over management of the station.
