Tower of Vignola

The tower is located within the S.I.C. “Monti Russu” area, on the promontory situated between the tourist villages of Vignola Mare and Portobello di Gallura. It was built during the period of Spanish rule around the 17th century. Its construction was part of a coastal defense fortification project, with the purpose of providing sighting and signaling of raids by sea. Made in a truncated cone shape, it has a basal diameter of 12 m by 12 m in height; the entrance is 5.35 m above the ground and is accessible by a 6 m ladder; at that time it could only be reached by the use of a ladder or ropes. The entrance leads to a chamber 6 m in diameter that was divided with partitions into three rooms, two of which had thrones that served as the commander’s and troop’s quarters; in the middle is a sturdy central pillar supporting the domed vault. On the weapon terrace from the parapet, with
a thickness of 0.95 m, there are some gunports.
