Underground trenches and architecture of World War II.

On the summit of Mount Palmas coexist with the nuraghe some structures built in more recent times: these are the military batteries belonging to World War II, with attached underground trenches that can also be visited from the inside.
In World War II Sardinia played a major role due to its geographical position.
In this context, it was necessary to ensure adequate protection for the island, capable of countering an air offensive and a possible attack from the sea.
For this reason, a complex system of reinforced concrete emplacements and bunkers (also called “casemates”) was built between 1942 and 1943 in order to protect the sections most exposed to the danger of a landing, the so-called “Caposaldo VIII Avellino.”
