Villa Maria Pia

The former Cuguttu penal colony complex consists of a fully fenced park and a two-story building. The building occupies a square-shaped area and has two entrances, one used by the former prison and the other by the administrative offices. Recent excavations have revealed the presence of interconnected cistern wells that provided water supplies for Maria Pia’s farm. Of particular interest is the Gothic-Aragonese crypt within the park surrounding the villa. Known as the “Knight’s Tomb,” it is probably what remains of the former 15th-century St. James Church.
