TOWARDS a museum of the future. An open workshop for reflection

Digital and technological innovation increasingly represent frontiers of experimentation for cultural and museum institutions. In this rapidly changing scenario, Kainòn Foundation in collaboration with ICOM Italy has developed the project TOWARDS a museum of the future. An open workshop for reflection, with the aim of initiating a participatory reflection on the possible trajectories and transformations of museums in the digital realm, with a particular focus on immersiveness, virtual spaces, metaverse and still multiverse. It is not merely a matter of thinking about how to apply technologies within cultural institutions, but of redefining strategies and goals, adopting thinking that takes digital as a complementary and not an alternative dimension to acting towards heritages, publics, communities/territories. This will be accomplished through a multi-voice curatorship articulated as a true process that calls together different ecosystems of digital innovation, culture, and society to bring to life a choral vision of the Museum of the Future. The project is structured in 3 phases: analysis, co-design path and experimentation.
It wants to propose itself as an innovative path that, starting from moments of dialogue and discussion with museum directors and other hybrid professionals lands on concrete experiments, the result of co-design work, conducted according to a bottom up approach.

The project was presented as part of LuBeC 2022, the international meeting dedicated to the development and knowledge of the culture-innovation supply chain promoted by Promo PA . The launch took place on October 6 as part of the panel “Museums of the Future. An International Comparison on Cultural Strategies, Between Tradition and Contemporary Languages,” which Fondazione Kainòn and journalist Luca de Biase co-curated with Promo PA. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the nature and positioning of cultural experience, and the potential and risks of creative dynamics within the paradigm of digital transformation.
