Su Peinconi – Graptolite Park

The paleontological site of “Su Peinconi,” now Graptolite Park, is located a very short distance from the town of Goni and can be reached through a charming little road surrounded by dense vegetation. It is an extremely relevant site for Sardinian paleontology, discovered and described by Alberto La Mamarmora and considered among the most interesting and studied in Sardinia. For this reason, the Geominerary Park of Sardinia, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Goni, has initiated a project to enhance the area that is currently being implemented. The fossil remains of graptolites are found in an outcrop of schist rocks. Graptolites were marine organisms that lived in the Silurian Sea about 450 million years ago, which covered much of the island and continents. The living creatures, now extinct possessed a primitive nervous system and were united in colonies in shallow environments. Following the gradual disappearance of the sea they became trapped in mud and sediment, resulting in the shales observable at “Su Peinconi.”
