St. Jude Thaddeus Apostle Orthodox Church

Located on Cagliari Street, it was founded in 1983 by Father Giorgio Gerace driven by his love for the Eastern Church and the Sardinian people. The parish belongs to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, is led by the Metropolia (Archdiocese) of Italy and Malta, and represents one of the first testimonies of the return of Byzantine worship to Sardinia after more than a decade. The parish is dedicated to the Apostle Judas, known as Thaddeus, not to be confused with Iscariot. Called “Jesus’ cousin,” the Holy Apostle is said to have been the son of Mary of Cleophas and Alphaeus, brother of Joseph. According to tradition, the Icon of the Saint is often depicted together with the Mandylion, or the veil representing the face of Christ and of Acheropite (not created by human hand) origin. Apostle Thaddeus brought the Mandylion to Edessa and performed many miracles there. The church has a barrel vault and features a wall with many icons, called the Iconostasis, which serves to separate the altar from the nave. Byzantine churches have retained this form because it is reminiscent of that of the Temple of Solomon. In fact, the place where the altar is located is also named the Holy of Holies, and only ministers of worship, deacons, subdeacons and clerics serving there can enter it. When Father Kiriaco (Domenico) Casile, who passed away in 2009, took up residence at the parish in 2007, he decided to continue the work begun by Father Giorgio by doing his best to keep the Orthodox community of Quartu united and commissioning work to renovate the building.

Currently, beginning in December 2018, Father Anthony Gjonej is the pastor. The church is being rebuilt from the foundations with the funds raised by the Orthodox Archbishop of Italy, His Most Reverend Eminence Polykarpos Stavropoulos, and by him himself it is inaugurated on December 2, 2023. The vision of the Church was carried out at the suggestion of the same pastor Father Anthony with the approval of Archbishop Polykarpos.
