Bortigiadas

The municipality of Bortigiadas has 703 inhabitants. Its territory extends from the flat hamlet of Tisiennari, close to the Coghinas River, in a landscape that is typical of Gallura, with forests and granite formations, to Punta Lasana. The Forestry Authority manages the municipal lands, which include a nursery, apiary, and pond.

The place name Bortigiadas is traced by Angius to the term oltiju (cork), referring to the ancient roof covering of houses. In the historic center there are not only the churches of St. Nicholas of Bari, the Virgin of Carmel, and Santa Croce, but also two wash houses, Fontana Vecchia and Fontana Nuova. In the surrounding area are numerous country churches. Photographic panels depicting Sciola’s terracotta sculptures of village men and women can be seen along the village streets. The Mineralogical and Earth Museum and the War Memorial in Santa Croce Square. Belvedere Square offers a wonderful view of Mount Limbara.
