The village, an ancient aggregate of rural houses, lies southeast of Carbonia. Until a few decades ago, the fabric of narrow streets overlooked by low houses with a typical Sulcitan structure, with inner courtyard and lolla, was clearly separated from the urban context of Carbonia, of which the town had become a hamlet following Royal Decree no. 2189 of 05/11/1937. Today the considerable expansion of private housing has united the offshoots of the town with the original core of Serbariu, which had been elevated to the dignity of a municipality by decree-law in 1853.
