The church of San Giovanni, located in the center of the small village of the same name, stands near the ancient town of Tharros on a cemetery area that was originally pagan and later Christian. The monument, built of whitish sandstone blocks for which a probable baptisterial destination has been hypothesized (late 7th), is part of the group of three large churches erected in Sardinia in the Byzantine age with the typical cross plan with a dome at the intersection of the arms.
